[Abstract]bjective To assess the perception of pregnant women in Osun state about food aversion during pregnancy and the consequences this may have for the pregnant women and their offspring. The health of the mother and her nutritional status can influence the health and survival of the child because of the biological links between her and her infant during pregnancy and lactation. Methods Eight hundred and forty-four women of reproductive age (15~49) were randomly interviewed in six selected local government areas of Osun State in 2006.Results Almost 37% of women in urban and 34% in the rural areas claimed that their certain food items that should be avoided during pregnancy and this is irrespective of their levels of education.Apart from socio-cultural excuses, other reasons for food avoidance include:health reasons, vomiting, odour, stomach pain, heaviness, chest pains, fear that it may affect the fetus and indigestion, and fear that it may increase size of the fetus.Education does not have significant influence on food aversion in the area. Conclusions Findings of this study indicate that specific policies should be developed by appropriate governmental agencies and ministries to control and prevent both micronutrients and energy deficiencies during pregnancy in order to reduce the high maternal morbidity and mortality in Nigeria.
