[Abstract]Objective The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of monosodium glutamate (MSG) induced oxidative damage on rat testis and their possible relation with testicular ascorbic acid levels. Methods Adult male Wistar rats (n = 6/group) were divided into two groups, the control group and the experimental group. The experimental group received MSG (4 g/kg BW) for 15 d (short term) and 30 d (long term exposure) respectively. The testicular weight, testicular lipid peroxidation level and testicular ascorbic acid levels were estimated. Results Testicular weight was decreased in both the experimental groups (P<0.05) compared with their respective control.A significant increase (P<0.0001) in the lipid peroxidation level was observed in both the experimental groups.Concomitantly, the ascorbic acid levels decreased in the testis (P<0.05~ 0.0001;studens t test). In between the experimental groups, the oxidative damage observed was greater in the short term when compared with long term. Conclusion Therefore the results of present study suggest that the exposure to MSG can lead to testicular damage.
